Recently, most of the received emails in Mail (Catalina) are preceded by a small grey icon ("TO")
Anyone know what these are about?

These are Label preferences that have been set in Mail. This may have happened if you were using some other app, or if the Preferences were changed in Mail.
Sometimes, when applications run, changes occur, and then an application becomes manipulated, technically. So, restart your Mac and then reset your SMC and NVRAM. That way anything else that may have been affected will be set to how it should be, rather than having to manually changes thing each at a time.

Do you also have numbers next to the items in the various menus? If so then you have Voice Control enabled in the System/Accessability/Voice Control preference pane. Turn it off and those tags should go away.
