apple pencil is connected but wont draw

My Apple Pencil is connected with my iPad but it wont draw on my notes or my drawing apps

First, check that the Pencil tip is firmly screwed-on to the Pencil.

Yes. Only first, not second gen


You can use Apple Pencil (1st generation) with these iPad models:

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch
  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)

Yes. Your iPad7 is compatible with the first generation Apple Pencil.


The first generation Pencil has a Lightning connector for both charging and pairing with the iPad - whilst the second generation Pencil uses a magnetic/inductive coupling to the edge of the iPad.
