It keeps saying that my payment method needs to be updated but i have no subscriptions . help !

See Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201266. Note that you do not have to have a subscription to be instructed to update your payment method. Did you try to update? What happened when you tried if you did try?
Ok, then that may be the problem. Generally speaking one is required. But, see:

Create or use an Apple ID without a payment method https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204034
I'd try adding a credit card payment method.
See if you can set it up without a credit card.
