Was it Synchronized with iCloud?
If so, view iCloud, and find out if anything resides in there.

A Few Thoughts:
Go Here: Download iCloud Photos and Videos - Apple Support
A typical image is 2-4MB (1000MB = 1GB, that's up to 4GB (roughly, at maximum), and there is 5GB for free iCloud Storage. So, see if you can download these.
Other items may reside, so check those options too.

Ask yourself, did I do any of that?
No.
If you didn’t create a backup somewhere, where would you be retrieving it from?
If I went to the Apple store, would they not be able to retrieve it from their internal system?
No.
If you did not create a backup, your data is gone.
No one has it.
How can I check if it’s been backed up?
I’ve read that there are apps that can extract your photos from your device. Do you think this is correct?
Only some were, out of 12000 photos only 2000 were.
