It sounds like you want to save your downloads to a folder on your desktop. I would recommend reading the following article. to learn how to govern where you downloads are downloaded. This article assumes you use Safari as your web browser, if you use another browser please advise.

Once done, you can then locate your downloads wherever you please. Once you have completed that step you can drag the folder to the Finder Sidebar to create a shortcut.

  1. The Finder shows everything on your Mac. It's the core app for navigating around your computer. The Desktop is a folder and you view that folder through the Finder, like every other folder. So there is no way to prevent "stuff" from showing in the Finder.
  2. You can change the destination of downloads in Chrome too. Chrome Menu -> Preferences

Finder is the programme that helps you 'find' and open files.

Desktop is a folder which shows all its contents on your 'desktop'

So when you download something it can't go to Finder. It's going to your Desktop (or some other folder you have have set) and Finder can show it to you.

So what are you actually trying to achieve? :-)

Let me also add an important issue; I am a psychologist using a web claims site, i download a claim I've made, print it out and do not save it on my computer for confidentially reasons. Yet there it is on Finder. It takes my precious time to delete each. That is why I don't want automatic saving to Finder for pdfs

Ah. It may be helpful if I explain that you can't download anything without it being stored on your Mac. Which means if you don't want it on our Mac you must delete it when you're done with it. I know it appears to download directly into a window but the file download is still stored on that Mac.

I appreciate that you don't actively save it on your Mac but that's just how it works!
