Free Apple TV.

I bought a new iPad and they gave me free Apple TV for a year for free. Why can’t I watch anything..? Every time I try to watch a movie it wants money . So my question is is it free or not.? Or am I doing something wrong when I go onto Apple TV? Thanks I hope someone is able to tell me if I am doing something wrong
