recover imessages from icloud

How do you actually recover accidentally deleted iMessages from iCloud when the backup is on and fresh within 24 hours and without downloading 3rd party software?

If you were using messages in iCloud, i.e. Keep all your messages in iCloud - Apple Support and you deleted the messages, then they are irrevocably gone.

thanks...although that makes no sense to have stuff backed up to icloud and then not being able to retrieve it with one accidental slip. pics, emails and everything else seems to have a "recently deleted" path but why not imessages???
