An error occurred installing iPadOS 13.6

Hello!

I've been trying to update my iPad Pro 2020, but I keep getting the same error when I tap 'install'.

"Unable to install Update. An error occurred installing iPadOS 13.6".

I got this error by trying to update my tablet through iTunes. Afterwards, I tried to download the update on my iPad itself and see if that worked, but I got the same error. The update does not fail to download, and it verifies successfully. It just does not want to install!

I tried solutions from support articles but no dice.

There's no error code/number for the rest.

Please don't link me to the "I can't update/how to update my device" support articles- I've already read them, tried the solutions and they do not cover this specific issue as far as I've seen.

Any help would be appreciated!

If not already tried, delete the update package that is failing to install - and then try again.

To delete the failing package:

Settings > General > iPad Storage - scroll down the list of Apps until you find the Apple Update, tap, then select Delete Update.

Next, I suggest that you force-restart the iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

After restarting, attempt to update the iPad:

Settings > General > Software Update

As of yesterday, the current version is iPadOS 13.6.1.

In case of continued difficulties, this support page may offer some additional help:

I hope this is successful in resolving the issue.

Perhaps this will be helpful with troubleshooting:

If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch won’t update - Apple Support

You may need to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You’ll find the Contact Support link at top-right of this page.

Alternatively you might visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store - where the technicians will be delighted to help.

A further alternative with which to initiate a support case is to use the excellent Apple Support App:

I hope this information proves to be helpful in finding a resolution.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I've already tried both of those solutions, but they didn't work for me.

I don't think I need to restore my iPad as it still functions properly, and I wouldn't get the prompt that would ask to restore the device for that reason. I'll try and see what happens when I try, though, and I'll get back to you.

Unfortunately that support article doesn't apply to my issue.

I've tried talking to an Apple genius and they're about as dumbfounded as I am. We both agree that there's seemingly nothing wrong with my tablet. I don't want to factory reset the entire thing just for an update, so I'll definitely try contacting support.

Thanks!

Edited to add: Oh.. When I select the category in the support page it'll prompt me that I should send the iPad in for repairs- that's not going to happen. I suppose I'm out of luck and I won't be able to update my iPad, but that beats losing it for a couple weeks despite it being a fairly new device. I'll factory reset it once to see if that solves it but otherwise I'll just stick to 13.5.

Thanks for the help, anyway!
