If you are still under warranty for your Mac— the charger and cord are covered.

I have a MacBook Pro. The smaller wire with the MagSafe 2 end is broken. Someone gave me that wire and block (45W) from a MacBook Air. The MacBook Pro block is 85W. I tried it out for an hour or so, in the magical hope it would at least trickle charge it. It did not. Now I’m considering cutting off the old wire from the MBP and cutting off and splicing onto it the new wire from the MBA. Otherwise, I’ll have to wait until I have money on Wednesday to order a new charge cord. That keeps me out of commission until Thursday or Friday when it would arrive, and I’m in the middle of a project.
Did you try charging with the Mac completely shut down, not just sleeping?
Probably, it's OK. Most likely the same cable, if it's all USB-C. This would not be the case for MagSafe cables. To be on the safe side, consider using the cable for the 87/96 watt MBP charger with your MBA charger.
