Erase MacBook for recycle

I have a MacBook 7.1, at least 9 years old, and want to recycle it. However, I am having a problem wiping it clean. When I go to Disk Uitlity and highlight the Macintosh HD drive, the Erase option is not highlighted. Is there another way to clean any personal data or utilize the erase function?

Are you starting from recovery as described in step 1 and choosing View - Show all devices as described in step 2 of How to erase a disk for Mac - Apple Support
