after installing/updating to catalina, its taking forever to login. ive been waiting for almost 12 hours. is this normal? what should i do? This is the screen it’s stuck on

If Safe Mode is showing this, you’re left to try Diagnostics (a few of the oldest Macs compatible with Catalina will need Hardware Test) and Recovery, but it’s possible that your Mac has a storage corruption, or is having hardware problems.
The I/O activity of an update or upgrade can push a failing hard disk further into failure, for instance.
Add-on cleaners and add-on anti-malware apps and other similar add-on apps can cause corruptions, too. And sometimes a crash or a hard shutdown can cause a corruption.
Run diagnostics (or hardware test), and see if there are errors.
Then see if Recovery can restore this.

If you do not have a current backup, get a backup first, and get a backup before any other tests or operations.

It clears some system caches and disables some startup items.
Clearing caches may fix whatever’s causing the problem. If it logs in, restart normally and see if it works.
If tried to restart multiple times. What does logging in with safe mode do? Or what do I need to do in safe mode?
Even when logging in when it says safe boot, I still get that optimizing your Mac message and it’s stuck on this screen
I reinstalled MacOS and same thing. When I login it stays on that screen.
I just purchased my first MacBook in December. I did recently install omnidisksweeper before I updated to Catalina. So that is causing the error?
I have zero backups. I wish I knew how to even do all that you suggested.
The Optimizing your Mac message doesn’t have anything to do with the problem. It will remain there until you close it which you can’t do until you load in.
At this point I would boot into recovery and reinstall. That should not cause data loss, but you may get to a point where you need to erase the drive,
Back up, back up again, wipe, reload macOS, and use the installer or Migration Assistant to migrate in your contents. Migrate, not restore. If that migration fails, try the same migration sequence again, and skip migrating the apps; transfer your settings and documents and not your apps.
I'd ShutDown, and Restart.
Hold down the power button until it shuts down.

I tried logging on in safe mode, but I still get that same result. I don’t know what to do at all.
Try shutting it down, then press command+r while it is booting up. Then you need to delete the password for your account, and then restart your Mac.
