"Free Apple TV"
I apparently received a "free" year of Apple TV, but when I log in I have to pay for all the things I want to watch?

The offer is for Apple TV+, which is different. The offer has to be redeemed to access it: sign up and start a subscription. Apple TV+ is not everything in the Apple TV app. Apple TV+ is a single channel in the Apple TV app, that has Apple Originals.
Other content in the Apple TV app is not included; notably movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store (buy or rent) have to be paid for separately.
