All contacts suddenly disappeared

Has anybody else had their contacts randomly disappear. I have lost all but a few contacts! I have tried to turn off contacts in iCloud and then back on again and still nothing. I’ve heard a few people have had the same problem but no help with resolving the issue. TIA
