If I buy my son an apple watch 3 gps what will he be able to do function wise without an iphone or any cell phone? He's 9 and I was thinking of getting him one.

He won't be able to do anything an apple watch requires an iphone to function.

The alternative is this;

Set up an Apple Watch for a family member
