How do I download an app from a site that is not identified by Apple?

I have a brand new iMac, and was trying to download an application, but received a message that the app couldn't be opened because it was unidentified by Apple. I went to the Internet to try to find a solution, and most said that I should go to System Preferences, then to Security and Privacy, and select apps from all sources. There was no option to "open anyway", and when I right-click on the app, I don't have the option to open it. Any suggestions? This is so frustrating! Thank you.

Hi, Allan. Thanks so much for your response and for the referral to the article. I had already read it, and it didn't answer my concern. I've looked at all the hints I can find on the web, but can't find an answer. On Catalina, there is no option to "open anyway" when I go the the Security and Privacy area in System Preferences. When I go to Finder and locate the download, I get the message that this app cannot be opened, and there is a -47 under the message. Don't know what that number refers to. So if you have any other suggestions, I would welcome them! Thanks again.
