iTunes on computer

I have iTunes on my Windows 10 computer. Each time I open iTunes on the Windows 10 computer, it shows the prompt “Your previous iTunes installation must be removed before continuing. Would you like to remove it now? Click Yes or Quit. I always click Yes. It reinstalls iTune seamlessly, with no issue. But how do we put a stop to that prompt being shown and me having to click Yes each time I open iTunes.

Although it would have been nice to use Windows 10 Repair, as follows, it did not fix the problem:


Repair options from the Settings page


  1. Select Start  > Settings  > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select iTunes.
  3. Select the Advanced options link under the name of the app (some apps don't have this option). On the page that opens, select Repair if it's available. If it isn't available or doesn't fix the problem, select Reset.


The steps below solved the issue:


Uninstall iTunes and related software components and reinstall iTunes in the following order:


  1. iTunes - right click and use Windows 10 Uninstall
  2. Apple Software Update (I did not have this so no need to uninstall)
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support (I used Revo Uninstall to uninstall it)
  4. Bonjour (I did not have this so no need to uninstall)
  5. Apple Application Support 32-bit (I used Revo Uninstall to uninstall it)
  6. Apple Application Support 64-bit (I used Revo Uninstall to uninstall it)
  7. Press the Windows and R key on the keyboard to open the run command.
  8. In the Run window, enter: %programfiles%
  9. Click OK to open the Program Files folder.
  10. Delete the following folders, if they exist: a) iTunes, b) Bonjour, c) iPod
  11. Open the Common Files folder, then the Apple folder.
  12. Delete the following folders, if they exist: a) Mobile Device Support, b)Apple Application Support, c) CoreFP
  13. Open Local Disk (C:) located in Computer, or whichever hard disk your programs are installed on. If you're running a 32-bit version of Windows, skip to step 18. If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows, continue with step 14.
  14. Open the Program Files (x86) folder.
  15. Find the following folders and delete them, if they exist:  a) iTunes, b) Bonjour, c) iPod
  16. Open the Common Files folder and then the Apple folder.
  17. Locate the following folders and delete them, if they exist: a) Mobile Device Support, b) Apple Application Support, c) CoreFP
  18. Go to your Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin.
  19. Restart the computer
  20. Download iTunes from Apple.com and choose the latest iTunes version for your computer (in my case, iTunes 12.10.10 for Windows [Windows 64 bit]). Reason being is the Microsoft App store kept on saying I own the app but I do not have it. I have the iTunes data folder but not the iTunes app as I uninstalled it based on previous steps.
  21. After successful install, the installed iTunes will check if there are later versions than the one downloaded and in my case, there is so I let it download
  22. Then I notice there are two iTunes in my Windows 10 computer so I clicked one of them to see which is older (and which I assume I need to uninstall)
  23. Then the prompt that started this whole issue: “Your previous iTunes installation must be removed before continuing. Would you like to remove it now? Click Yes or Quit.” came up again. It did give me the frustrating jitters. But have faith, I clicked Yes and it did all the removal and install seamlessly. Now there is just one iTunes and the prompt “Your previous iTunes installation must be removed before continuing. Would you like to remove it now? Click Yes or Quit. “ no longer comes up. It is now neat, tidy, and performing functionally well

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.


Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Relative to last step 23 above: This last step may take longer than usual. Also, do not worry if a) the removal and install are happening at the same time, i.e., there will be a prompt box that says “Removing previous iTunes installation” and a second different, separate prompt box that says “Please wait while Windows configures iTunes” and b) the first prompt box “Removing previous iTunes installation” will seem to take forever, as giving you the feeling the computer hanged. Just let it be and it will end up functioning well.
