can i retrieve deleted messages from my sons ipad

If the “messages” were included in an iTunes backup, then yes, you can restore the iPad from the backup. Restoring the backup will return the iPad to its state when the backup was taken - along with the messages that were on the device.

If you don’t have a backup, any deleted messages will not be retrievable.
