transferring files and apps from old Mac mini to a new one

hello,

I just bought the new Mac mini, but I don't want to transfer all of my old apps and old files, want to be able to select what files and what apps, can I do this from my time machine? or the migrate program? I don't want to end up with the same files and apps with my new Mac mini,

thanks,

Time Machine is all or nothing. Grab a USB External Drive and make a Clone of the old Mac Mini using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. Plug the Clone into the new Mac Mini and copy whatever you want from the Clone to the new Mac Mini. Then use that External Drive as a Clone backup in addition to Time Machine.

do I have to keep the external drive along with the Time Machine?

I don't feel secure with just a Time Machine backup as they have failed multiple times in the past. Besides, using CCC gives you other advantages over Time Machine, like being able to boot to the external drive if (when) your computer gives you problems.
