I have OS Sierra on my Mac Pro Book, mid 2014. If i upgrade to Big Sur, will there be any lost information and will it be necessary to delete files because Big Sur is much more powerful?

That doesn't have anything to do with being "more powerful". It takes up more space on your hard drive. You will need a minimum of 35 GB of empty space for the download and install. And, since you should always maintain a minimum of 10 - 15 GB of empty space at all times so the OS can run properly, you should make sure you've got about 50 GB available before trying it.

Don't forget to make a full backup before upgrading - just in case.

I am inquiring about upgrading to OS Big Sur because often times, when I go to use my computer, I have to restart to get current emails.

I called Spectrum, my internet provider, and they told me it could be that I need to upgrade from OS Sierra.

I had thought it was related to the modem and they would be able to help me with that.

Any thoughts on that?

Thank you!

That may be true. There has been a shift from SSL to TLS, given that all versions of SSL are cracked.

I think Apple hasn't changed the checkbox from SSL because everybody uses SSL as a generic term for encrypted connections. It is now using TLS and I don't think it will attempt even SSL 3. Sierra Mail may be using SSL. Spectrum probably still honors an SSL connection, but that may be going away.

I don't know why that would result in the intermittent connections, but perhaps.
