do I not understand appleTV correctly?

So I have the app on my TCL ROKU TV, and I have a subscription. Apparently I can't simply stream any movies without first purchasing them. If I want to watch a movie but not own it, I don't have that option. It appears that I'm paying for Apple to give me a list of movies I want to buy, and that is worthless to me.

Can I not simply select a movie and stream it without buying it, or do I not understand Apple TV correctly?

The subscription is for Apple TV+ (not Apple TV). With the Apple TV+ subscription you can watch any movie in the Apple TV+ section (within the Apple TV app) on your Roku without paying an additional fee.
