I noticed that when you rearrange icons in the dock, they become pinned. How can I stop this from happening?

I really like my dock to be very minimal and clean, I only have 2-3 apps pinned there and the rest I don't like to persist when closed. However, when I am working I like my apps to be in a specific order so they are easy to get to. I noticed that when you rearrange apps in the dock, they automatically become pinned. So I'm either forced to constantly unpin them after I close them, or to not move my apps around. Is it possible to disable the auto-pin upon rearranging the order of apps? Thank you!

Hey Old Toad,

I created a new Admin user and tested, the problem persists. I should note, I have tested it on 3 computers I own, 2 different Macbook Pros and 1 iMac, and I asked a friend who has a Macbook Pro and all of them have this same issue. I also spoke with a senior IT tech at Apple Support and they said it was a built-in feature.

@Old Toad - I attempted your fix and it did not work.

I did a ton of creative google/research and discovered that this is isn't a 'problem' and is on purpose. Apple/MacOS has this as a feature. It assumes that I want to have the items kept in the dock if I arrange their position. Knowing that, I was wondering how I could make it not do this. Some sort of code, or an app or something to override my mac doing this? I've checked out System Properties and can't find anything for this.

@jeffreythefrog - This isn't a case of recent applications automatically popping in, and the apps do disappear after I tell them to not be kept in the dock. However, on the next time I open and rearrange them, I have to uncheck 'Keep in Dock' all over again. I do this multiple times a day with how much I rearrange my apps upon opening them.

Here's a video I recorded of my desktop showing the exact problem:

This may not be what you'd like to hear, but I can only suggest that you rely less and less on the Dock.

You don't need the Dock to launch an application - and, apparently, you do not use it for that purpose - since your problem is to make sure that applications are not kept in the Dock.

You also don't need the Dock to switch between applications. Use command-tab. No need to reorganize the Dock if you simply don't use it much!

oot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and set all of the items you don't want to keep in the Dock to "Remove from Dock". Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
