ive recently purchased an 2011 iMac which has a fault with the thunderbolt ports (suspect on the board). I would like to connect the iMac to my MacBook Pro 2011 to enable me to use the iMac as a second display. Can this be done using FireWire or some other means?

No. It must be Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort.

is there a combination of adapters and cables I could use to get around having the thunderbolt ports on the iMac fixed? I don’t think there is.
