In Mail, the red delete button to the right of an email pops up rarely, sometimes sneaks over a little bit then hides again, and mostly never appears. How do I get it to appear so I can delete an email quickly ? Thanks. j

You are swiping your cursor across the message in the list.
Swiping the message left reveals the delete button, but if you don't swipe far enough, it just displays while you are dragging.
Once you get far enough, it stays.
If you swipe all the way across, it should delete without having to click the button.
Select the message(s) that you want to delete. Press the delete key. Or right-click on the message(s), and choose Delete from the secondary menu. Any lateral mouse or trackpad movement over a Mail message will reveal the blue Unread, or red Delete areas.
Barney: Swipe? I don't know how to swipe on an iMac. If I click-drag the email I can drag it wherever, but I can't get the red delete button to show. Sometimes the Unread button appears somehow. Thanks for the reply.
Viking: Yes, I know about the delete key, but I thought that red Delete box would just be faster. I have tried dragging the cursor over the email at various speeds, and clicking on each end of the email. Nuttin happens with either. I have no right-click option on this new mouse, that I am aware of anyway. Both of the Unread and Delete boxes/buttons/whatever seem to do what they feel like doing. It's hit and miss. Probably depends on what input device you are using. You can swipe on a Magic Trackpad/2 and a Magic Mouse/2. Those gestures can be found in the Mouse/Trackpad System Preferences.
If you are not using either, I have no idea how it appears. Check with the company that created your input device.
I've never used a Magic Mouse, but my understanding is you swipe across the surface of the mouse just as you would a Trackpad. You don't click or even press any more than to make contact with the surface of the mouse.
But, having never used one, I can't possibly explain how to "swipe" with one.

If you are using an Apple Magic Mouse 2, the right-click must be enabled by System Preferences > Mouse > Secondary click.

Using the mouse that came with the iMac. I turned on all the gestures, and have the same results; intermittent showing of boxes for no discernible reason. FM, I guess.
