No sorry, the 2020 M1 does not support using the 2013 iMac as a display.

I have received conflicting answers from different Apple Reps, so that is very Helpfull, though not good news!
What would you think is the likelihood Apple changes this with a software update?

Yea' I seen many conflicting complaints from folks here on this subject.

It's highly unlikely, because it requires both the old older Mac's Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt 2 hardware plus the older software versions.
