My iMac (27" 2015) with Catalina logs me out after 20" no matter how many times I change the energy saver or screen saver settings; even tried disabling password for log in but it doesnt change :(
It is an issue when I am trying to upload or download photo libraries, etc. I see the question in numerous forums but no answers that dont seem to involve very advanced user abilities. I tried a Safe boot and still happens.

Have you had a look at System Preferences > Security & Privacy?
Click the padlock and unlock the panel. Then click the Advanced... button at the lower right of the panel.
There you can disable (or enable) "Log out after xx minutes of inactivity."
