You should be able to log in with your ID unless your Apple ID isn't the ID and password that was originally used when the iPad was set up. In that case you will see an Activation Lock.

See the Apple Support article(s) below. Note the last section which covers having Apple remove it if you have proof of purchase.

Turn off Activation Lock - Apple Support.
