Backup

I’m confused at how backup works. My phone says that its last Backup was today but then when I go to gallery, at the very bottom it shows “uploading X items”. So are my photos not backed up when the regular backup happens? Is it a separate backup? I have photos turned on in the backup options.

Yes, iCloud backup and iCloud photos are two separate things and do not happen at the same time.
