Update to Big Sur from OS X 10.9.5

I downloaded the software from the app store and tried install it. Instead of a smooth installation, the program locks up when I try to choose the disk for the installation. I have around 40 GB of free storage on my driver and the computer is a Macbook Pro from late 2013 (so it should be supported). At the moment my software is OS X 10.9.5. I would really appreciate any help I could get.

You need a minimum of 44.5GB of available storage. See the following from How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac needs 35.5GB of available storage to upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier release, your Mac needs up to 44.5GB of available storage.
