Printers & Scanners Settings not Showing

When I go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, the page shows for an instant, and then disappears, and I'm left with a dark gray window that looks like this:

I think this has something to do with the way I handled an incident that arose when I tried to connect a new printer. I connected a printer and then tried to print a page using the printer, but it was not going through even after a while. I tried to cancel the printing, but Safari would not respond. So I tried to add another printer. But then the printer would not successfully add, and System Preferences would not respond. I opened task manager and tried to shut down both processes, and I was successful in closing Safari, but not in closing the Printer adding process. So I shut my computer down, hoping I could start the process over. However, now I cannot access my Printer settings, because they do not display when I open them up.

Hmmm... interesting.

I am not clear how to resolve this issue—except try a Safe Boot, and try again.

SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

If this fails you— from the browser interface you can interact with CUPS directly:

CUPS management copy and paste to your browser address bar http://localhost:631/admin/

if you see no interface— then from the Terminal.app simply enter this command line, copy&paste :

cupsctl WebInterface=yes

and reload your browser window
