Software update needed to connect iPhone 6s to MacBook Pro running OS X 10:11:6?

Got a message when I plugged my iPhone 6s into my Macbook Pro, running El Capitan XOS 10:11:6, saying software update needed to connect my iPhone to computer. What is this and is it for my phone or laptop?

If you see "Software update is required to connect to your iOS device" on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
