iMac as external Display
I would like to use an iMac 24 inch (Early 2009, running El Cap) as a monitor for my MacBook Air (mid 2011 version running High Sierra). is it possible and what do I need?

Sorry, no TDM will not work on an early 2009 iMac. Please refer to Apple's instructions in Target Display Mode.

Thanks for the response and the link.
Must say I’m confused as the Apple instructions (iMac 24 inch) would suggest that it’s possible (iMac running High Sierra or earlier and MacBook running Catalina or earlier) with a Mini Display Port cable.
Am I missing something?
Please re-read it, it should be clear but sometimes looking it over again can clarify.
Bottom line though is TDM is basically a dead technology. It worked for a very small subset of iMacs and is no longer support. My suggestion is if you need an external display, please buy one. Why, simple they are MUCH more reliable than TDM every was, they are simple to setup and do not require expensive cabling, and they are inexpensive starting at less than $100.
Please don't waste your time or efforts on something that simply will not work.
Looks to me like he meets all the criteria:
Thanks. Sage advice
