Hard Drive space

How do I free up space on my Mac Book Air hard drive so that I can update my device? I don't seem to have the option to delete my photos which take up a lot of space. They appear in my icloud account.

Can't free up space I have 99gb of photos on my mac. I deleted all local files and turned off iCloud (so all my pics are in iCloud but not on my mac at all). I even permanently deleted them from the "recently deleted" folder. My mac still has 99gb of photos, even tho my folder is completely empty.
