external hard drive

Hi, my external hard drive is not showing up on my MacBook Air and Mac Mini both M1, latest software installed. using thunderbolt connection, Hard drive light comes on but doesn't show on desktop. tried my old external hard drives and samething not showing up. older harries are usb to thunderbolt cord, any help appreciated thank you.
