Thank you for your reply, Tomi, and for letting us know that didn't work.
Seems Apple recommend a Sandisk USB Flash drive for storage ... along with other storage options .

Wondering if you might want to take your new MacBook Air (and the USB drive?) into a nearby Apple Store ?
There you may find expert help and advice on both difficulties!

Hi Tomi57,
Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you are not seeing the stick on the desktop,
you might want to try opening a Finder window,
to see if the stick is listed near the top in the sidebar list.
Cheers :-)
Hi brob,
thanks for the input, unfortunatly, it still does not work.
Another strange thing is, the original OS is 11.6.2, I tried to upgrade it to Monterey. After loading the 12,16 GBs, the system reports an error. If try to reload the original OS (starting in protected mode), it shows as starting OS Monterey, but after a long period of time, it tells me, that a failure "8" has occurred.
Strange days indeed:-)
Tomi
