This article seems obsolete. The instructions to up volume, down volume, hold side button do not go to recovery but to shut down. Does anyone know how to get to Recovery Mode?

If it reboots you don’t need to go to Recovery mode, which is only for phones that can’t reboot. What are you trying to accomplish by going to Recovery mode? There’s probably another way to meet your objective.

Ah, then here are the instructions you need→Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support. See the internal link in that tip about erasing all content, which you must do before restoring the backup.
You need to HOLD the side button, ignoring Shutdown.
The operative word here is QUICKLY; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky.
If you hold and wait for the Apple logo you're in reboot. I don't see where recovery is.
I was trying to force a restore from a saved back up.
