I lost all my data, photos etc. How do I know if they were backed up in the cloud?

I tried restoring my phone from iCloud. No data exists. Does backup occur automatically?

iPhone SE, iOS 15

Log into iCloud.com to see what data you have synced. If you have backups turned on for iCloud, the device will backup when powered and locked (typically overnight when you charge your phone).
