Brand New Mac Mini - can't get past very first screen showing mouse

Upon powering up a brand new out of the box Mac Mini for the first time, a pink and blue screen appears with an alternating picture of the bottom of a mouse and what could be the back of a keyboard (very poor artwork actually can't tell what it's supposed to be - but I assume a keyboard.) It looks like it is telling you to turn on the mouse and keyboard.

I have an apple keyboard - a little older but bluetooth capable, and I have an Apple trackpad. I have plugged the keyboard in via USB, and it won't recognize either device. I am hopelessly stuck on this screen. If I hit any key on the keyboard, it makes a sound - the "donk" sound when it knows you hit a key but won't do anything about it. The trackpad just won't connect.

You should get a wired keyboard and mouse for initial setup then after pair the bluetooth trackpad and keyboard.
