Parental Control Settings, outgrown

iPhone that my son has been using since age 15. He is now 20. The parental set 5 years ago need to be turned off BEFORE setting up a new phone for him.

I cannot remember my ā€˜parental codeā€™ from 5 years ago. The Apple ID is his, not mine. How do we release his phone from the controls?

or, should he set up a new Apple ID, and lose all content on the old phone?

Reset your Screen Time passcode, so you can turn off Parental Restrictions on his new iPhone if they get turned on after setting it up.

Phil thank you for responding. 5 years ago Family Sharing wasnā€™t the way it was set up. My sonā€™s phone was set up while at the store & on his device.

In efforts to follow directions to remove control from his iPhone, Iā€™ve open his phone, gone to screen time, where it only asks me for a 4 digit passcode. When incorrect code is entered, it simply says ā€˜1 hour until retryā€™

(I wonder also if the software knows when he has ā€˜come of ageā€™ and has already shut off the controls. Possible? And if so, what age would that be? My son will be 21 in October.
