Hello. What can be a problem in this case?

I suspected that was the model of your laptop. The SSDs in that particular model definitely have a much higher rate of failure than other models. Make sure to have a good backup because this SSD failure will get worse where you may not be able to access the SSD at all.


If your laptop does not qualify for the free SSD repair program, then you can replace the SSD with the OWC SSD. Since there are no USB adapters or enclosures for this proprietary SSD you will only be able to retrieve your data from a backup.


You may want to have an AASP install the SSD for you since it is difficult to work on this laptop, but not all AASPs will do this (definitely not an Apple Store). The Bottom Cover is hard to remove and reinstall, plus there are multiple steps to disconnect the battery including a very fragile cable & connector. OWC does have video instructions, but they will look easier than it is.

If you go for an original Apple SSD replacement, then Apple/AASP will only replace the SSD with the same size SSD.


Only you can decide if it is worth spending any money on this laptop knowing how many known potential issues exist. Besides the Display & Keyboard issues, you need to check to see if your two USB-C ports are loose. If the cables don't fit snugly enough into the USB-C ports, then you may get intermittent random disconnects due to the poor design of the ports which wear out much too easily since it is only the fiberboard material which helps lock the cables in place. If the cables are too loose, then the entire Logic Board will need to be replaced. This is something I've been noticing with our 2016-2017 USB-C Apple laptops (yet another extremely poor design decision by Apple -- later models actually have added metal edges to the ports to minimize wear). Keep in mind it may not be too much longer before your Battery will likely need to be replaced which will be at least a $200 repair.

It means you likely have a failing SSD. Since you don't provide the exact model of the Mac, it is hard to say for sure. If your Mac uses a third party SSD, then perhaps the SSD Adapter being used is not compatible. From reading these forums it seems only the Sintech SSD adapters have the best compatibility record.


If your Mac is using an original Apple SSD, then it is most likely the SSD has failed. If you have the MBPro 2016 or 2017 non-touchbar model, then you may be able to install a third party OWC SSD. Otherwise if you have any other USB-C Mac, then you will need to have Apple replace the SSD or the Logic Board since many of the USB-C Macs have the SSD integrated (aka soldered) onto the Logic Board. The other USB-C Macs utilize non-standard SSDs so there are no third party replacement options at this time (and may never be since Apple programs the security enclave to associate the SSD with the system).


Make sure to make a backup of your data now while you can because the issue will only get worse to the point where the SSD may not even show up at some point and there will be no way to recover the data.

Understand, we are all working Remotely from all around the world. 


Therefore, we do not have the On-Hands experience the User ( you ) has with this computer.


The next best thing for us to having an actual On-Hand experience  with this computer is to follow the steps below


Download the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.


The application is free or paid from added features. 


Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).



It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.


 The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. 


Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )



We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.
