If Messages in iCloud is enabled, the messages cannot be retrieved. If you're unsure if this feature is turned on, here's how to check: Use Messages in iCloud. If Messages in iCloud isn't turned on, and you have a backup that contains the messages, they can be restored with these steps: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. Keep in mind, any data that has been put onto your iPhone after the backup was created will be lost. If you have made a backup of the iPhone since you deleted the message, you will not be able to retrieve it either.

Tap Settings on the Home Screen

Tap on your name at the top of the next screen

Tap iCloud

Tap iCloud Backup

The time of the last backup should appear

Backups occur about every 24 hours as long as the iPhone is connected to the network and the charger. It is not possible to know in advance exactly when the next backup will run.

You can also back up manually at any time by selecting Back Up Now

There is another possible fly in the ointment and that is the iCloud settings for Messages. In order for Messages to back up to iCloud, the setting must be "Off" when you check as follows:

Settings > iCloud

This will display options to back up or not back up a number of items. It might seem unintuitive, but the slider must be "Off" next to Messages in order for Messages to be backed up to iCloud. If the setting for Messages is "On", then Messages are not being backed up to iCloud.

Even if you find that the Messages you want are still in the iCloud backup, things are messy. You have to reset/erase the iPhone and then use the backup to restore. So, you will lose any new data that you have added to the iPhone since the time of the backup.

The bottom line......don't delete any message unless you are sure that you will never need it again in the future.

Unfortunately, things become more tricky and "iffy". The information below may be disappointing to you regarding the messages.

When the messages were on the iPhone, they were being backed up to iCloud......assuming things were set up to back up that way.

But, if you deleted the messages, the very next backup later that day to iCloud would have reflected that change, so the backups of the messages would have been deleted when the iPhone next backed up.

The only way that you might be able to retrieve the messages from iCloud would be if there were no backups that occurred after you deleted the messages.

Some users find this difficult to understand. Let's say the messages were on the iPhone on July 1 and the iPhone backed up that day. OK so far.

Then, the messages were deleted on July 2, and later that day the iPhone backed up to iCloud. The messages would not have been included in the backup.......because they had already been deleted from the iPhone.
