Apple TV wants me to allow the app geni.us to open link....

What is the app geni.us? I cannot find it in the apple store - AppleTV requests that I allow geni.us to open a link to allow viewing of AppleTV premier video. I cannot find info with an internet search. This seems highly unusual. Please advise.

I have searched my older marketing emails from Apple, and found that Apple legitimately uses the Geniuslink services for those emails. c.apple.com-links in the email redirect to geni.us-links, which in turn redirect to the content URL. It seems to be a way to measure the effectiveness of those marketing emails through this third party service. (Not sure why they won’t do this in-house.) It is not malicious, but your clicking is being recorded for marketing purposes. If you are okay with that, then you can allow geni.us-links.

You don’t have to use the links in the email. You can directly open the TV app, or open the website tv.apple.com for access to e.g. Black Bird.

On what device did you see this? Did you get this in a browser? What were you doing when this message/request appeared?

It does seems suspicious, and shouldn’t originate from anything directly from Apple.

It seems to be a service to track what users select/click, in part through the use of custom URLs.

I was using my MacBook Pro to access Apple email. I opened a message from Apple TV addressed to my Apple ID email.

The address of the sender is: Apple TV<appletv@insideapple.apple.com>.

The message header contained "Watch on Apple TV" and displayed the photo of the new series "BlacK Bird" and Apple+.

Below this was a blue box that contained "Watch the Premier".

I clicked to watch the video and instead of playing a message popped up saying Apple TV requests to allow https://geni.us to open the com.apple.tv link with TV, choose a different application, or (a box to check) always allow allow https://geni.us to open com.Apple.tv link with TV?

Did this occur because I was attempting to access the video with my MacBook and not the Apple TV device? That doesn't make sense because the preview video came in an email.
