I have been unable to complete a back up since May this year. When I connect the WD Elements is starts the back up but wont complete and I cannot exit the Hard Drive to close it.

I have managed to accumulate three of them and I don't use either anymore.
Dismally slow is the main problem, but they also seemed prone to errors.
Have you run First Aid? You might consider reformatting it and starting over. Or you could do what I did, bought faster more reliable portable hard drives and SSDs.
