Can't get my ipod touch 6th generation to update. Help?

A 6th generation iPod Touch cannot update to iOS 13 or beyond. So if it is already on iOS 12.5.5, there is no update currently available.
The recent updates for this model have effectively been security ones (bug fixes). Therefore, is it reasonable to assume that any future update (if one should become available) will be in the IOS 12 range and for security reasons only. In other words, you will not be able to get any new features for it.
