Question about AirPlay on Apple TV

Hey,

I am considering buying a new Apple TV, just the basic HD one. I have one simple question. If let's say I want to Airplay a video from Safari from my phone to the AppleTV, can I turn my phone off? Or does it have to be turned on? I am talking about the display. Essentially, if I can turn off my screen while using AirPlay.
