M1Pro MacBook Pro upgraded to Monterey 12.5.1, now has major issues

I just upgraded from 12.5 to 12.5.1 on my 16" MacBook Pro M1Pro and now I'm having major issues.

First, some programs are not opening now like Brave browser and 1Password. I click on the apps on the dock or the Application folder in Finder and the icon jumps but doesn't open the app. Previously, Mail didn't open either but I did a fresh install of 12.5.1 after wiping my HD. Then Mail was working again. However, even after the fresh install other apps don't open like the above mentioned.

Also, after multiple restarts, even if I close all apps before hand, and un-tick the "Reopen windows when logging back in", a previous state of my desktop with the same apps open up again. Almost like it doesn't remember the most recent state. Related to this is when I open System Preference, it always opens to the Battery section even if previously I navigated to a different section then close it, then reopen it goes to the Battery section. My dock also cannot store its new state: when I remove apps from the dock and I restart the computer all the default apps show up again in the dock.

I've already done a wipe of HD and fresh install of macOS Monterey 12.5.1, but is there any way to downgrade back to 12.5?

This has been the worst update I have ever had with any MacOS.

Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon using Apple Configurator

If this is not possible due to lack of secondary apple computer ( as per info contained in above link ) or not within your skill set

Apple Repair and choose the method best suited for your needs. The On Hands method by Apple Experts maybe able to put the computer back to working order

Yes I have that "Recent apps..." box unchecked. It's more the default apps that show up on dock after a fresh install that I remove by grabbing and moving them off the dock, which works, but then after a restart they are there again. Like my computer doesn't remember the new state it is in. I cannot open 1Password still; Brave browser doesn't open but the Nightly version does work, so I'll be using that for now, since that is the only way to access 1Password for now.

Also I just tried using Quicken and had a backup which asked me to reenter the passwords to my financial accounts. Fine did that. But it keeps asking for the passwords, after restarting the app, even though I clicked on "Add password to Keychain". It seems again that nothing is being saved. Really annoying.

Here's the etrecheck report:

I'm guessing there is no way to go back to 12.5 is there? I've searched for ways to do that and it seems impossible now, when previously with prior MacOSs you could.

Point one- " (dock icons showing up again when previously removed from said dock) " refer to below image for illustration

Point two - " some apps don't open again after initially working ."

Not know what specific applications are involved - this is a bit of Mind Reading exercise which I am not good at.

The next best thing for us to having a semi - actual On-Hand experience  with this computer is to follow the steps below

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The application is free or paid from added features.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

I looked into how to wipe the entire SSD and do a clean install with an external HD of MacOS Monterey. Unfortunately I found a youtube video that showed just that while in Recovery Mode, I used the Terminal command "diskutil apfs deleteContainer [device ID]" (The device ID was the top disk0). The vid then goes to Disk Utility and "Erases" the Apple SSD which I tried to do but this is what shows:

I tried to reinstall Monterey but now there is no Startup Disk to install to. This is the Apple SSD now:

Then I tried the First Aid:

Here's the disk structure using "diskutil list"

and using "diskutil apfs list"

I've tried to "createContainer disk0" or disk0s2 yet no Startup Disk.

Is there a way to recreate the startup disk again?

Thanks

That is a lot of work and trouble shooting you have done 👍 but a quick question.

Once the drive had been wipe and a fresh installation was performed, was Setup Assist used to Restore all your data, application etc back into the computer ?

Issues that may have exist when the TM Backup was performed will be migrated to the New Installation This would effectively Negate all the work that has been done ( Wipe and Clean Installation )

There might be a way to roll back to Monterey 12.5 but this is much more complicated and risky ( IMHO ) for Apple Silicon computer.

It is not like the " Olden Days " on Intel and make a Bootable Installer and Wipe the Entire Drive and lay down a new Installation.

Aug 20, 2022 7:58 AM in response to PRP_53

Yes, actually a reinstall of 12.5.1 which didn't do anything to fix the issue, a wipe & clean install with Migration Assistant from TM, and a wipe & clean install without Migration Assistant but with manual installation of some apps. Every time I've had issues like the system just doesn't remember it's latest state (dock icons showing up again when previously removed from said dock) and some apps don't open again after initially working. I would be inclined to rolling back at this point if it's possible.

Thank you for the Report.

I will dissect it, in detail,  and get back to you.

Going back to lower version of Monterey on an Apple Silicon Computer is not as easy as the Old Days with Intel Based Computers.

Creating a Bootable Installer of an older version of Monterey and booting into it on M1 / M2 computer and wiping the drive and installing - will not work - period

Aug 20, 2022 2:41 PM in response to nuclidefuse

As per the supplied report, to be polite, have never seen a drive structure like this one let along on an M1 / M2 Apple Silicon Computer.

It looks to these old eyes, that there may have been several attempted or failed attempts to upgrade various versions of macOS Monterey

Thank you,

I got the M1 Pro MacBook up and running through the Configurator app. In particular I also used the website and video here: https://mrmacintosh.com/restore-macos-firmware-on-an-apple-silicon-mac-boot-to-dfu-mode/

It was important for anyone else doing this to insert the USB-C cable on the left side of the Apple Silicon MacBook; I tried doing it 3-4 times when the cable was inserted on the right side, and it didn't work. Another thing is to count out pretty exactly 10 seconds when holding down the buttons, the screen may turn on but will go off again and the DFU icon will show up on the Configurator of your other mac.

Finally, this how my disk structure looks using "diskutil list"

MacBook-Pro ~ % diskutil list

/dev/disk0 (internal):

  #:            TYPE NAME          SIZE    IDENTIFIER

  0:   GUID_partition_scheme             500.3 GB  disk0

  1:       Apple_APFS_ISC ⁨⁩            524.3 MB  disk0s1

  2:         Apple_APFS ⁨Container disk3⁩     494.4 GB  disk0s2

  3:    Apple_APFS_Recovery ⁨⁩            5.4 GB   disk0s3

/dev/disk3 (synthesized):

  #:            TYPE NAME          SIZE    IDENTIFIER

  0:   APFS Container Scheme -           +494.4 GB  disk3

                 Physical Store disk0s2

  1:        APFS Volume ⁨Macintosh HD⁩      15.4 GB  disk3s1

  2:       APFS Snapshot ⁨com.apple.os.update-...⁩ 15.4 GB  disk3s1s1

  3:        APFS Volume ⁨Preboot⁩         146.5 MB  disk3s2

  4:        APFS Volume ⁨Recovery⁩        822.1 MB  disk3s3

  5:        APFS Volume ⁨Data⁩          2.9 GB   disk3s5

  6:        APFS Volume ⁨VM⁩           20.5 KB  disk3s6

Everything looks normal now, there are no aberrant disk volumes/containers. It sucked that I deleted the wrong disk.
