iPhone syncing unselected music and videos

As far as I can tell, I have the relevant sync settings selected.

Sync only checked songs & videos

Selected artists, albums, etc.

The only checked item on the Music tab among the artists, albums, genres, & playlists is a playlist that I maintain for my phone.

I suspected that this is a metadata issue because I did some spot checking of the tracks, and I haven't found any so far that were purchased thru iTunes. However, not all non-iTunes tracks are synced despite the settings.

But are the songs in the Playlist also checked (ticked)?

The option to Sync only checked songs and videos refers to individual songs. So if a song is in your selected Playlist, but the song itself is not checked, the option to Sync only checked songs and videos will mean that the song in question will not be added to your device.

Look in your iTunes Library, at the list of songs (the View/View As/Songs view is perfect for this task). Do the missing songs play in iTunes and do they have a tick in the box to the left of the song's title? If the answer to either question is "no", that's why the song doesn't make it to your phone:
