You do not say which mac model this is.

If it is an Intel Mac, try resetting NVRAM and SMC.

Also: hold down Option key, and from the Apple menu choose "System Information". On the left of the window, click Wifi.

Do you get some information on the right, about software and hardware, and network information below that?

If not, what do you see?

It shows that the AirPort card built-in your Mac is "missing." That is, macOS does not recognize that a card is installed. If resetting the SMC did not help, it may be possible that it failed or there is a logic board issue.

Please try the following steps, in order, or until resolved:

Step 1

  • Open a Terminal session. The Terminal application is located in /Applications/Utilities.
  • At the command prompt, enter: ifconfig -a <return>
  • Locate the network interface that is giving you trouble. (Note: en1 = AirPort)
  • Look to see if Terminal indicates the problematic interface is not enabled. (Note: Enabled = flags: <UP, BROADCAST, SMART, RUNNING, SIMPLEX, MULTICAST>, status: active)

  • If not enabled, enter: sudo ifconfig en1 inet up <return>
  • Enter the Administrator account's password, if asked.
  • To verify that the problematic interface is now active, enter the following at the  command prompt: ifconfig -a <return>

Step 2

  • In Finder, go to /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
  • Move (not copy) the preferences.plist file to the macOS desktop.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Verify that you have connectivity. If not, go to the next step.

Step 3

  • In Finder, go to /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
  • Move (not copy) the NetworkInterfaces.plist & com.apple.airport.preferences.plist files to the macOS desktop.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Verify that you have connectivity. If not , go to the next step.

Step 4

  • In Finder, go to /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
  • Move (not copy) the entire SystemConfiguration folder to the macOS Desktop.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Verify that you have connectivity.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, your next step would be to contact Apple Support directly. To do so, simply select the "Get Support" link in the upper right-hand side of this forum's web page.
