Disable USB storage in OS 12

We have a requirement to disable write to/from USB external storage on a small fleet of Macs mostly running OS 12 (Monterey). I've been reading up on this but can't seem to find a definitive "this is how you do it" for current systems.

As I understand, ability to block USB storage via kext has been deprecated, as has the option to use configuration profiles via iMazing and Apple Configurator.

So, without having to subscribe to another piece of third party software, is this actually achievable?
