is there a way to use the FireWire or thunderbolt port on an iMac with usb devices?

iMac 27″, OS X 10.11

You have not provided enough details since the answer with no details is "It Depends".


If you have a USB-C Mac, then yes, you can use the appropriate adapters & cables to connect them since USB-C Macs utilize USB3 & Thunderbolt 3 protocols.


If you have an older Mac, then you must use USB devices with a USB port. Thunderbolt devices on a Thunderbolt port. And Firewire devices on a Firewire port (or on a Thunderbolt port with an appropriate Apple adapter).
