Reboot your Mac. Press and hold the shift key when launching Pages again. This prevents it from loading its last execution state, which in your previous case, was a hung application for some reason or another. See if Pages now behaves normally.

VikingOSX,
Thank you, it worked. Most appreciated.
Using a late 2012 21.5inch iMac, hard disk is so slow as to be unusable but using two external SSD's, system and backup on time machine. Email, Preview, Safari, etc all work well but my mainstay and constant use, Pages, became stuck even with reboots. Your hint on rebooting holding the shift key has Pages working again. Most appreciated, thank you.
You are welcome.
Just a passing note for anyone else reading this, one reboots without the shift key, and only applies the shift key concurrently when launching Pages from a prior hung (or crashed) state.
